May 2013 - Digital Group

An excellent turnout for the last meeting of the season.

NEWS

- On One Software is offering half price on their PhotoSuite 7 to existing Nik users and also many free plug-ins. Thanks to Scott Taylor for finding this.

- Craft and Vision are offering 82 Lightroom presets for £12. Thanks to Malcolm Cartledge for finding this.

- How the mighty have fallen. Kodak are selling their film and kiosk business to their own UK Pension fund to escape from bankrupty protection.

- Have you ever wondered about making a video of a route using the Google Maps Street View feature? Well, now you can. Hyperlapse Videos from Teehan and Lax enables you to do this for free. You can even pan around whilst the video plays! One limitation is that the movie travels so fast that it only really looks good on fairly straight roads.

- Nikon have released a firmware updgrade for a group of cameras; D600, D800, D4, D3s, D3x, D7000 and D3200.

- Having bought a Nikon D7100 recently, I was intrigued to see what difference the 24Mpx sensor made over the 16Mpx of the D7000. Interestingly the results of some quick test shots were that the images were very similar in many respects but there was a little more detail from the higher resolution sensor (not surprisingly). With the cashback offer from Nikon at the moment the D7000 is looking spectacularly good value at around £550.

If you like a bit of pixel-peeping, the dpReview Studio Comparison feature enables you to peep into the pixels of many current and recent cameras and explore how they respond to various ISO settings. Up to four cameras can be compared side-by-side and the results are very interesting. Comparing the D7000 and 7100 for example confirms that bigger sensor produces slightly more detail but also slightly more noise.

LIGHTROOM

Thanks to David Baldock for revisiting some of the Library and Develop module features. We've given Lightroom a good airing this season now that it's more reasonably priced. I remain very much Photoshop/Elements-focussed due to the manipulation work that I love to do. Whether Lightroom continues to feature regularly in future depends upon whether we find a champion willing and able to promote it on a regular basis - any volunteers?

NEXT MEETING

Thursday 3rd October 2013. Have a great summer!

Cheers, Steve
