Compatible Inks - User experience

Post by Chris Worthington » Wed Dec 22, 2010 4:17 pm

Hi everyone (anyone ), I started a conversation with a newish member last week about compatible vs original inks. I would be interested in other people's experiences. My previous experince of compatible inks, a few years ago, was they are more trouble than they are worth. I have an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 and have stuck to Epson original inks since then. However I see a particular brand of compatible ink on the market which on the face of it sounds promising. These are Inkrite compatible cartridges which do not infringe manufacturers patents (they claim) and appear to be a genuinely sound option - at a third of the price. Has anyone tried these inks? and what are your thoughts/recommendation?

I've been using JET TEC compatible inks for my Epson 1290 for several years, and have found them very satisfactory. My provisos are that one needs to calibrate them (eg using the APS Color Munki) and although they have been usually consistent between cartridges, there was once when recalibration was necessary. One therefore has to be aware that there may be a change and perhaps print a test image when changing cartidges to check.

Although I realize that my experience has been only with dye inks, I see that JET TEC also supply inks for the 1800 at a third of the price that Epson charge, and as a company they seem reliable.

Yes, I've heard from a member (can't remember who) in the past that InkRite are OK. It might be worth asking in the Digital Group about experience with compatibles.

I think the main concern is with colour consistency and quality for the best photographicresults. However, for everyday use and office document printing, I have had perfectly acceptable results from cheapo unbranded compatibles in an older or second printer.

Cheers, Steve.
