Amersham Beyond Group - FAQ

Post by spb » Sun Dec 09, 2018 1:29 pm

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Amersham Beyond Group has evolved from the Digital Group to concentrate exclusively on creative photography and digital art.

It meets on the first Thursday of each month (with occasional moves as necessary). The group will explore the extension of photography into the realm of photo-based art. This covers anything that requires the photographer to do more than be in the right place, wait for the right moment, and release the shutter.

The techniques can include, but are not limited to;
• creation of composite images from layers of other images
• digital editing using Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Affinity Photo and similar software
• exploration of the vast array of available creative software tools and techniques
• in-camera techniques involving staging prior to the shoot, intentional camera movement, multiple exposures, etc..

The group aims to go beyond traditional photography, beyond the viewfinder, and beyond development software such as Lightroom. If this is on your agenda the Amersham Beyond Group may be just right for you. Advice in photo editing and home printing will always be available for those coming-up-to-speed, but this group is not aimed at photographic beginners.

This group is a sub-group of Amersham Photographic Society and after three visits as a guest, membership of APS is required.

Active participation of the group is expected, with members attempting at least some of the Challenges. The other remarkable special interest groups that Amersham uniquely offers will support APS members who are not ready to go beyond.

MONTHLY CHALLENGES

These will be set to encourage members to explore new creative techniques and show what can be done. They are not compulsory but I want attendees to try new ideas on a regular basis. New versions of old exposures are fine but please no finished images straight from the archive.

Size: 1600px wide x 1200px high maximum, JPG, sRGB colour space, 5MB max. file size.
Filename: #x CRAZY TREE by Anthony Other.jpg or #x by Anthony Other.jpg where x is the number of the Challenge.
Deadline: Midnight on the Monday preceding each meeting
Email to: see below

Tips; For help with re-sizing images see the Competitions & Results tab on the APS main website. Attach images directly to the email and not within a folder. It may also be a good idea to include a few words in the body of the email as empty emails can be flagged as spam. I do see the content.

We will show as many images in meetings as we have time for, at least one per member per challenge, per month. All submitted images will be shown online. A ‘Before’ and ‘After’ pair of images can also be submitted if that adds to the story. In this case the filenames should be #x BEFORE and #x AFTER etc.

Each Challenge will be scheduled for three consecutive meetings but they never expire.

OTHER CREATIVE PROJECTS

If you are working on other creative images or projects we'd love to see them. Maybe you would welcome some feedback or need a nudge in a different direction. See below for submission.

Images to the beyondchallenges address above go through an automated checker to ensure compliance with size, naming and colour space. All submissions should receive a reply (unless they are not recognisable as images) so check your spam folder if you don't get one. In the event of a rejection, the reply will indicate the nature of the problem. Pay particular attention to the precise format, capitalisation and spacing of the filename. This is a common source of rejections.

SHOWING OUR WORK

Members' Challenge images can be viewed at Amersham Beyond Group on Flickr and there will be occasional opportunities to show them at the main meetings of APS. Of course they can also be entered into the society’s regular print and projected competitions although these can tend to favour traditional pictorial photography.
